Estonia is home to over 2300 lakes with an area of more than one hectare. Together, they cover over 2100 km2, or approximately 4.8% of Estonia's territory. The majority of the lakes' total area is comprised of Lake Peipsi, Lake Võrtsjärv, and the Narva Reservoir. Small lakes, on the other hand, account for only 176 km2, or 8.5%. Most of Estonia's natural lakes are of glacial origin.
